Exquisite Padoo aka Ice Cream Beans – How To Eat

Do you know the name of this fruit?  Have you eaten it before?  My cousin shared these photos with me a few days ago and initially I told her I didn’t know what this fruit was.  Then it hit me like a ton of bricks.  I remember the fruit, it is called Padoo.  I told my cousin it was as if my recently deceased mom reminded me of this fruit. I have not seen or eaten Padoo in a very very long time.  I am hoping to get my cousin do a video for me showing how to eat this fruit.

Padoo is a legume that produces a podded fruit with a smooth textured, sweet, edible white pulp surrounding the seeds.


I have seen spellings such as Pwadoo, Paudoux, Pawdoux, Pois-doux,

In Costa Rica this fruit is known as Guaba or Ice Cream Beans. In Guyana this fruit is known Whitey or Whitetee


How to eat Padoo aka Ice Cream Beans: Using a sharp paring knife, score the pod lengthwise around the bean. Then, gently pull the pod into halves with your fingers. Pull the fruit out of the pod and separate the seeds before eating.
